New Delhi hotel fire kills 21, leaves dozens injured
More than 40 people were taken to hospitals, eight in critical condition, as investigators examine permits and the fire's cause.
At least 21 people died after a fire swept through Flourish Stay, a hotel or bed-and-breakfast in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi, on Wednesday morning. Delhi police said search-and-rescue operations continued after the blaze was brought under control, while more than 40 people were taken to hospitals. Some of the victims were said to be foreign nationals from African and South Asian countries who had come to Delhi for treatment or to accompany family members. Witness accounts said some guests were trapped on upper floors and jumped to escape. Eight fire trucks were deployed. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, including a possible link to a restaurant on the ground floor and the building's licensing status as a lodging facility.
