Hotel fire in New Delhi kills 21, 40 treated
Some victims were medical tourists from African countries, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
A major fire swept through the Flourish Stay hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi, India, on Wednesday (3/6) morning and killed 21 people. Police said more than 40 people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while eight fire engines were deployed before the blaze was brought under control. Some of the victims were said to be visitors from African countries who had come to Delhi for medical treatment. Search and rescue operations continued after the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire is not yet known. In a statement quoted by media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the incident. Building fires in India are often linked to short circuits and poor wiring installations.
