Katy Perry rebukes White House use of 'Firework' in strike video
What's new: Perry said she was not asked for permission and called the song's use with bombing footage a violation of its message.
Katy Perry criticized the White House after its official TikTok account used her hit song "Firework" over video of military strikes. The post, uploaded Thursday, paired clips of exploding bombs with lyrics from the song and the caption, "Iran has been warned." Perry wrote on X on Saturday that she was "shocked and upset," and said she did not approve or authorize the use. She said the song was written as an anthem of hope, healing and inner strength, and that pairing it with destruction and violence betrayed what it stands for. Perry joins other artists who have objected to the Trump administration's use of their music in political videos, including Kesha, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Celine Dion and Kenny Loggins.
