South Sumatra wildfires reach 1,926 hectares, OKI key focus

Wildfires in South Sumatra have spread to about 1,926 hectares as of Aug. 22, 2026. Response efforts are now centered in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency, which has reported a rise in fire incidents through August. The National Disaster Management Agency has deployed 9 air task force helicopters and 11,567 combined personnel to speed up firefighting. The aircraft are being used for patrols, water bombing and weather modification operations from Palembang. BNPB operations coordination director Djohan Darmawan said the deployment is aimed at containing the spread of fires in South Sumatra, especially in areas where hot spots have increased in recent weeks.
