Golden Star 1 container ship sinks near Batam, 9 crew safe
The Tanzania-flagged ship went under after taking on water while carrying 107 containers in the Malacca-Singapore TSS.
Container ship MV Golden Star 1 sank about 6 kilometers off the coast of Batam on Friday night after reportedly taking on water in the Traffic Separation Scheme route of the Malacca-Singapore Strait. The Batam Special Port Authority received the distress call around 21:30 WIB and dispatched the KN P-376 state vessel for evacuation. All nine crew members were rescued in safe condition and taken to Bintang 99 Pier, Batu Ampar, for medical checks before further handling. Preliminary reports said the Tanzania-flagged vessel was carrying 107 containers. Batam Vessel Traffic Service and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore both issued navigational warnings, while authorities said vessel traffic in the strait remained normal and there were no reports of oil pollution in Singapore waters.
