KAI drops plan to import used Japanese KRL, seeks 23 new sets

Eight sets are the most urgent, and KAI aims to meet all demand in 2-3 years with PT Industri Kereta Api, or INKA.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia has scrapped its plan to import used electric multiple-unit trains from Japan and shifted to procuring 23 new trainsets for Commuter Line Jabodetabek service. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said eight trainsets are the most urgent need, while the full procurement will be accelerated over the next two to three years. KAI has assigned PT Industri Kereta Api, or INKA, to handle the procurement, either through its own production or in partnership with foreign companies, on the condition that domestic industry remains involved. At the same time, KAI and INKA are conducting dynamic tests on the eighth domestically produced KRL trainset on the Bogor-Jakarta Kota line outside peak hours.
