Justice Department sues 3 states over in-state tuition for immigrants

The Justice Department moved to sue New York, Connecticut and Vermont over laws that let some immigrants pay in-state tuition rates or receive state financial aid at public colleges. The department argues the policies unlawfully give benefits to students who are not lawfully present while denying the same terms to some U.S. citizens from other states. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate said the department wants courts to block enforcement of the laws. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong vowed to fight the case, defending his state’s tuition policy. The department said similar challenges in Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Illinois have already produced court orders against comparable laws.
