Judge tosses part of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s 2007 confession

A military judge on Friday excluded part of a 2007 confession by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, after finding the statements were not given voluntarily. Lt. Col. Michael Schrama ruled that portions of Mohammed’s statements to investigators could not be used, a decision that could complicate a case that has already spent years in pretrial proceedings. Mohammed has been held at Guantánamo Bay since 2003. The ruling adds another legal hurdle to the effort to bring the long-delayed Sept. 11 case to trial through the military commission system.
