Judge halts New York mask ban for ICE and other federal agents

A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked parts of a New York law that would have barred federal immigration agents from wearing masks and required them to show visible identification while on duty. U.S. District Judge Mae D'Agostino issued a preliminary injunction, finding the challenged provisions were likely unconstitutional because they interfere with federal law enforcement operations. Her ruling applies to agencies including ICE, the FBI, the DEA and Customs and Border Protection. D'Agostino wrote that New York cannot set uniform rules for federal agents carrying out official duties. But she did not block a separate section restricting New York local law enforcement agencies from taking part in certain federal immigration actions under 287(g) agreements.
