A federal judge in San Francisco ruled that the Pentagon acted illegally when it labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk after talks over military use of its AI systems collapsed. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin wrote that the Defense Department had no articulable basis for the designation and instead sought to punish the company for criticizing the administration's position on AI use. The dispute centered on Anthropic's push for limits barring fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance. The ruling is a major win for the Claude maker, but it does not fully end the fight: a narrower Washington case over a separate Pentagon rule is still unresolved, leaving the designation technically in place.
