Jordan Nobbs targets Newcastle promotion push in WSL2 season

Why it matters: Newcastle finished sixth last season, but a summer rebuild has sharpened hopes of reaching the Women’s Super League.

Jordan Nobbs has set promotion as Newcastle United Women’s target for the coming WSL2 season, saying a rise to the Women’s Super League would feel like “job done” in her career. The 71-cap England midfielder said last season’s nine draws cost Newcastle too many points as the club finished sixth, 11 points behind champions Birmingham and nine off the playoffs. Newcastle have reinforced their squad in the transfer window with striker Martha Thomas from Tottenham and former Liverpool players Leanne Kiernan and Gemma Evans. Nobbs, who was born in Stockton-on-Tees and began her career at Sunderland, said getting a north-east club into the top flight would be a major step for women’s football in the region. Newcastle open the season at home to Wolves on Sept. 6.
