Pongpet suspension bridge collapses during inauguration in Pangandaran
Police said no one was killed, while a technical inspection is examining whether too many people were on the bridge at once.
The Pongpet suspension bridge in Margacinta village, Cijulang district, Pangandaran regency, collapsed moments after its inauguration on Sunday (30/8) at about 16.10 WIB. At the time, Pangandaran Regent Citra Pitriyami, local officials and residents were crossing the bridge, when part of the structure was damaged and several people fell. Police said everyone in the group survived and there were no fatalities. The bridge, about 60 meters long, serves as access for residents to Kampung Budaya Margacinta. After the incident, authorities closed the site to prevent people from crossing before inspection and repairs. Several reports cited possible overloading because many people were crossing at once, but the exact cause is still awaiting a technical examination.
