Italy moves to repair US ties after Trump-Meloni clash
What's next: Rome is looking to next month's NATO summit in Ankara to cool the dispute and protect trade and military ties.
Italy moved to contain a growing dispute with the United States after last week's public clash between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said June 23 that the two allies should de-escalate and restore normal bilateral work, while Meloni said she did not want to inflame the confrontation. The quarrel erupted after Trump said Meloni had "begged" for a photo with him at the Group of Seven summit, which she called made up. Tajani said he saw no current sign of new US tariffs or a troop pullback from bases in Italy, and pointed to next month's NATO summit in Ankara as a chance for further diplomacy.
