Italy cancels US trip after Trump insults Meloni over G7 photo
Why it matters: The rupture deepens strains between Washington and Rome days after the G7, with Meloni accusing Trump of treating US allies worse than adversaries.
Italy's government hit back at President Donald Trump after he told Italian television that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had "begged" for a photo with him at the G7 summit in France. Meloni called the account "completely made up" and said she was astonished by the remark. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani then canceled a planned trip to the United States, calling Trump's words serious and offensive to all of Italy. The clash marks a sharp downturn in ties between the two leaders, who had appeared to steady relations at the summit in Évian-les-Bains. Meloni said Trump showed more indulgence toward enemies of the West than toward longtime allies, adding: "Neither I nor Italy ever beg."
