Israeli troops surround Hezbollah tunnel complex in south Lebanon

Why it matters: The standoff near Kfar Tebnit threatens a fragile ceasefire and could complicate Iran-US peace talks.

Israeli forces have encircled a large Hezbollah tunnel complex beneath the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, with the military saying dozens of fighters are trapped inside. The site lies near Kfar Tebnit, about 10 km from the Israeli border, in an area that has seen renewed clashes despite an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire and a broader halt in open combat over the weekend. Israeli officials said troops killed at least two people in separate actions on June 23 and believe those inside the underground facility are running low on food and water. Hezbollah said the dead were civilians. Lebanese officials described the installation as one of Hezbollah’s largest underground sites.
