Israel strikes Abu al-Duhur base 8 times in Syria's Idlib

The attack drew U.S. criticism and added to tensions between Israel and Turki over Syria as Washington seeks ties with Damascus.

Israel launched eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur base in Syria's Idlib Province early Tuesday. Syrian state media and military sources cited in multiple reports said the targets included the runway and storage facilities, causing material damage but no casualties. The base is in northwestern Syria, about 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, and has long been only partly operational as a military airfield. The strikes came as Washington tries to repair ties with the new government in Damascus. Tom Barrack, the U.S. envoy to Syria, called the attack an unnecessary escalation. Ankara also accused Israel of shaking Syria's stability, while Israel said it does not want Syria's military capabilities to grow into a threat.
