Israel rejects Trump’s 15-point Gaza plan, keeps disarmament demand

Why it matters: The move clouds a broader ceasefire push and ties any Israeli withdrawal to Hamas giving up its weapons.

Israel rejected President Donald Trump’s 15-point plan for Gaza and will not withdraw unless Hamas fully disarms, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Aug. 9. Trump said in July there had been a breakthrough in his proposal to end the war, which Israel and Hamas had agreed to in 2025 and which began with a ceasefire. But Israeli strikes on Gaza have continued since the sides agreed to that ceasefire last October. Trump had also said Hamas agreed to lay down its weapons. Hamas ruled Gaza for nearly two decades before its Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel triggered the war.
