Iran war overtakes Trump’s G7 trip to France as energy fears rise
Why it matters: The summit was meant to focus on growth and security, but divisions over Iran now threaten G7 unity.
President Donald Trump heads to France for a G7 summit reshaped by the escalating conflict with Iran, pushing aside a planned focus on economic growth, supply chains and security. Trump is set to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders in Evian, while also taking part in a session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and G7 leaders. The war has sharpened disputes with U.S. allies as energy costs climb and European governments resist backing the U.S.-led campaign. The strains were exposed after Trump moved to withdraw at least 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, a decision later partly reversed with troops redirected to Poland.
