Iran publicly hanged 2 men over January protest-linked killings

What's new: UN experts said at least 24 people have been executed over the January unrest, with more death sentences pending.

Iran carried out the public executions of Abolfazl Sepahi and Amir-Hossein Safari on July 28 after convicting them over killings during anti-government protests in Isfahan province in January. Judiciary outlet Mizan said the two men attacked police officers with machetes and knives, tied them to road signs, dragged them, then set them on fire. Mehr reported the hangings took place in a square in Malekshahr, also referred to as Alikhani Square, with onlookers present. UN experts had urged Tehran a day earlier to halt death sentences for 12 men in the same case, saying the defendants were tried together in a closed courtroom without clear individual responsibility. Amnesty International warned at least 60 others could still face execution.
