Iran frees Iranian-American woman after 2024 exit ban case
What's new: Attorney Jared Genser said Dena Karari is out of Iran after 18 months and is returning to the United States.
Iran released Iranian-American citizen Dena Karari, ending what her lawyer described as an 18-month coercive exit ban tied to espionage allegations. President Donald Trump said Karari, detained in December 2024, had left Iran and was in good condition. Attorney Jared Genser said Iranian authorities linked her to the U.S.-registered Children of Mehr Foundation, which provides books and literacy programs to poor children in rural Iran. He said Karari was interrogated dozens of times by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security, though she was not formally imprisoned. Genser urged Iran to drop remaining charges against local staff tied to the charity and to free other Americans facing imprisonment or exit bans.
