Iran fired ballistic missiles at US forces as Trump ordered strikes
Why it matters: All missiles were intercepted, but the attack ended a brief pause in fighting and pushed oil prices higher.
Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East late Tuesday, according to U.S. Central Command, in what it called an attempted surprise attack from Iranian territory. Centcom said all of the missiles were intercepted. President Donald Trump responded Wednesday by ordering heavy retaliatory strikes on Iran, saying the pause in hostilities was over. Axios reported the missiles were aimed at a U.S. base in Jordan. Centcom also said U.S. and Saudi forces struck logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq after more than 30 drone attacks over three days by what it described as Iran-aligned militants. Saudi Arabia said earlier that drones from Iraq had targeted petroleum facilities in the kingdom.
