Iran fired 2 missiles at commercial ships in Strait of Hormuz
Why it matters: UK maritime monitors said a tanker off Oman caught fire, and Axios reported the U.S. could retaliate against Iranian targets.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night, Antara reported, citing Axios and two U.S. officials. The report came after United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a tanker sailing south off Oman was hit on its port side by an unknown projectile, causing a fire on board. UKMTO said no casualties or environmental damage had been reported and urged ships in the area to use caution and report suspicious activity. Iranian media, citing unnamed sources, said a Qatari oil tanker tried to use the Oman lane in the strait with U.S. naval support and was targeted after ignoring repeated warnings.
