Iran attacks 3 tankers as US, Oman press new Hormuz talks

Why it matters: About a fifth of traded oil and gas once moved through the strait, and tanker traffic remains far below prewar levels.

Iran and Oman held talks Saturday on ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian attacks on three tankers and U.S. retaliation shook an interim deal meant to end the war. Oman said both sides agreed to keep discussing the waterway at technical and political levels. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the meeting covered mechanisms to ensure safe passage, while also accusing Washington of breaching the deal by ending waivers that let Iran sell crude in U.S. dollars. The United States has urged ships to use a southern route through Omani waters under naval protection. Oil prices eased after the latest flare-up, but observed tanker traffic through Hormuz stayed sharply reduced.
