Iran appoints ex-Guards chief Mohsen Rezaei to security council
What's new: Rezaei replaces Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who moved to a political adviser role in the supreme leader’s office.
Iran moved former Revolutionary Guards commander-in-chief Mohsen Rezaei into the top job at the Supreme National Security Council, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr. The presidency said the change took effect after Zolghadr resigned from the post and took on new duties. Rezaei, 71, led the Guards from 1981 to 1997, covering most of the Iran-Iraq war, and later held several senior political positions. The reshuffle places another former Guards commander at the center of Iran’s highest security decision-making body as tensions with the United States keep the Strait of Hormuz in focus. Zolghadr will now serve as a political adviser in the supreme leader’s office.
