Iran Threatens to Cut 7 Undersea Internet Cables in Hormuz
The disruption could affect Arab states, Iran and regional digital traffic as embassies warn of fast-changing security risks.
Iran has threatened to target undersea internet cables crossing the Strait of Hormuz amid its ongoing war with the United States and a tightening blockade. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had identified a new target in the strategic area, adding that seven major internet cables run through Hormuz. The threat has raised fresh concerns about security in the Middle East after the U.S. embassies in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Israel warned citizens about the fast-changing situation. They also cautioned about possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions. Qatar's Foreign Ministry said the impact of cutting the cables would not be limited to one side, but would also affect Iran and its neighboring countries.
