Ipswich close in on Gary O'Neil after McKenna exit

What's next: Ipswich still must settle compensation with Strasbourg before O'Neil can replace Kieran McKenna.

Ipswich are close to hiring Gary O'Neil as their new head coach, with only final details and compensation to Strasbourg left to resolve. O'Neil, 43, is set to succeed Kieran McKenna, who stepped down after leading the club back to the Premier League. O'Neil joined Strasbourg in January and guided the French side to eighth in Ligue 1 and the Europa Conference League semifinals, where they lost to Rayo Vallecano. BBC Sport reported that Tim Jenkins and Neil Critchley are also expected to join him in Suffolk. O'Neil would return to Premier League management for the first time since leaving Wolves in December 2024. Ipswich open the new league season at home to Sunderland on Aug. 22.
