Interpol flags 6.5 billion cyber threats in Asia-Pacific over 2024

Why it matters: scams and phishing led reported cases, and two-thirds of surveyed countries already use AI in cybercrime detection.

Interpol warned that cybercrime across Asia and the South Pacific is accelerating, with private-sector data showing more than 6.5 billion threats were detected and mitigated in 2024. In a new regional assessment covering 18 member countries from January 2024 to March 2025, the agency said online scams and phishing generated the highest volume of reported cases, followed by information-stealer malware, banking trojans and ransomware. It said 66.7% of surveyed countries have adopted AI tools for predictive analysis, digital forensics and threat detection. In Singapore, scam losses reached S$913.1 million across 37,308 cases in 2025. Interpol urged stronger cloud security, continuous user education and real-time intelligence sharing with industry.
