Indonesian man charged after knife found in shoe at Changi

What's new: Security staff spotted the 19.5-centimeter knife in Terminal 4 X-ray screening after he was told to remove his shoes.

A 32-year-old Indonesian man is due in court Saturday after Singapore police said he tried to carry a knife through security at Changi Airport's Terminal 4. Officers were alerted around 1:10 p.m. Thursday at the departure centralized screening area. After the traveler was asked to remove his high-cut shoes, a Certis Cisco aviation security officer saw a suspicious sharp object in the X-ray image of his right shoe. Police said a search then found a knife and sheath hidden inside a sock, wrapped in plastic bags and sealed with tape. The knife measured 19.5 centimeters, including a 12-centimeter blade. He faces a charge of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place, an offense punishable by up to three years in jail and at least six strokes of the cane.
