BPS still counts about 7.22 million people without work, even as 148.19 million were employed in May 2026.
Indonesia's open unemployment rate fell to 4.65% in May 2026, its lowest level since 1994, when the figure was 4.36%. BPS data showed the labor force reached 155.41 million people; 148.19 million were working and about 7.22 million had not yet been absorbed by the labor market. Compared with February 2026, the unemployment rate declined 0.03 percentage points from 4.68%. In the same period, the labor force grew by about 497,000 people, while the number of employed rose by about 522,000. Kemenko Perekonomian said the decline was supported by economic recovery, investment and industry absorption. Even so, the millions still unemployed show that job creation and improving workforce quality remain challenges.
