Indonesia offers to bridge dialogue on Myanmar at ASEAN forum

Indonesia urged an extension of ASEAN’s special envoy mandate and an objective review of the Five-Point Consensus implementation.

Indonesia offered to help build a bridge for dialogue to advance peace in Myanmar at an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers with Myanmar in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday. Foreign Minister Sugiono stressed that any peaceful solution must be owned and led by Myanmar itself within the framework of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. He said implementation of the consensus still faces obstacles, especially in achieving inclusive national dialogue amid the civil war. Indonesia also called for an end to violence, the safe and non-discriminatory delivery of humanitarian aid, and an objective and balanced review of implementation progress. RI also proposed strengthening ASEAN’s collective mechanism, including discussion of extending the mandate of the special envoy for Myanmar.
