Indonesia launches SRUK as 4 forestry carbon permits trade

The national registry tracks carbon unit lifecycles to prevent double counting and is built to connect with international markets.

The government launched the Carbon Unit Registry System, or SRUK, in Jakarta on Thursday as a national registry to strengthen oversight of Indonesia's carbon trading. The system records the full life cycle of carbon units, from registering mitigation actions and issuing Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificates to transferring ownership rights and retiring carbon units. The government said SRUK was built to make records more transparent, accountable and traceable, while preventing double counting and remaining compatible with international registries. At the same time, the Ministry of Forestry said four carbon trading permits in the forestry sector have been operating since July 6, 2026: three PBPH concession permits and one social forestry permit. Raja Juli Antoni said the scheme is also aimed at extending economic benefits to 8.3 million hectares of social forestry and 1.4 million hectares of customary forest.
