Indonesia lets active police officers take civilian government posts

Why it matters: The change widens Prabowo Subianto's use of security forces in state roles and drew constitutional and rights concerns.

Indonesia's parliament passed revisions to the national police law on Tuesday that let serving police officers take jobs in ministries and other state institutions without first resigning from the force. The bill says active officers can fill posts tied to public order, law enforcement and public services, and can also be assigned elsewhere at the request of the president, ministries or state agencies if their expertise is needed. The changes also raise the mandatory retirement age for police, including the national police chief. The move follows last year's expansion of civilian roles for the military under President Prabowo Subianto and has drawn criticism from Amnesty International Indonesia and other opponents, who argue it conflicts with a constitutional court ruling and risks weakening police professionalism.
