Indonesia, China explore rice research center in Salor, South Papua

They also are eyeing a farm vocational school and farm machinery facilities in Merauke to support local food production.

Indonesia and China are exploring agricultural cooperation in the transmigration area of Salor, Kurik District, South Papua, following a visit this week by the Ministry of Transmigration and the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia. The plans discussed include building a rice research center and an agricultural vocational school to support food self-sufficiency and local education. The Salor area, at about 40,000 hectares, is seen as a strategic food hub in South Papua. Transmigration Minister M. Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara said research by Tim Ekspedisi Patriot 2025 found obstacles involving seedlings, pests, irrigation, farm roads and the need for agricultural equipment workshops. Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong said Merauke has strong potential for modern agriculture, while the two sides also discussed the possibility of a production facility for farm tools and machinery in Merauke.
