India court frees protest leader after Delhi rally detention

What's new: Student groups called for more action after Abhijeet Dipke and activist Neha Bora were released a day after their arrests.

An Indian court released Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday, a day after police detained him as he tried to lead a protest in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Student activist Neha Bora, another prominent face of the demonstrations, was also freed. The youth-led movement, backed by opposition parties and student groups, has staged near-daily protests this month over a voter-list revision that critics say favors Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. More than 130 million voters were removed in the revision. The Election Commission denies bias and says wrongly deleted voters can re-enroll.
