Illegal Waringinkurung landfill fire in Serang begins to subside
Officials estimate about 2.500 meters burned, while an excavator is clearing open hotspots beneath the trash pile.
A fire at an illegal dumpsite in Waringinkurung Village, Serang Regency, Banten, that had been burning since Friday (28/8) night began to subside on Sunday (30/8), although smoke was still rising from several points. Banten Police said firefighters were again dousing areas that continued to smoke, while an excavator pushed aside and broke up the trash pile so crews could reach embers inside. The burned area of the dump is estimated at around 2.500 meters. Residents first noticed the fire at about 18.00 WIB and reported it to Waringinkurung Police Station. The former brick excavation site used as a dumping ground made firefighting difficult, especially during the dry season and because the pile was covered in tall grass. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
