Ilhan Omar to leave DC home after federal search seized 17 items
Why it matters: The search came weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms and centers on possible immigration paperwork fraud involving relatives.
Rep. Ilhan Omar said she will move out of her Washington home after federal agents searched it last week, saying the attention from the raid left her feeling unsafe. Omar said Homeland Security investigators arrived around 6 a.m. with a warrant, searched for four or five hours and took 17 items, including phones, notebooks, a Somali-language children’s book and a vintage camera. A person briefed on the matter told The Associated Press that authorities are investigating possible fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork and have issued grand jury subpoenas to some relatives. The Justice Department has released few details beyond describing the case as a criminal investigation. Congressional Democrats criticized the timing so close to the Nov. 3 midterms.
