ICE halts most vehicle stops after 2 fatal shootings in Maine, Texas

What's new: Agents can still stop vehicles for the most serious targets as scrutiny grows over two recent deaths.

ICE has ordered agents nationwide to stop making most vehicle stops, a sharp policy shift after two fatal officer-involved shootings in Maine and Texas last week. Fox News, citing federal sources, reported the change took effect immediately and still allows stops for people deemed the most egregious targets with serious or violent criminal histories. The latest shooting happened in Biddeford, Maine, where the Department of Homeland Security said an officer shot a 26-year-old Colombian man after he tried to flee. Days earlier in Houston, ICE officers fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, after stopping a van while seeking another person. His family and passengers disputed DHS's self-defense account, and the agency's watchdog opened an investigation.
