ICE agents shoot New York man in car; 5-year-old was in back seat

What's new: DHS said the man struck two ICE vehicles and is now in detention, while New York officials demanded video and a full account.

Federal immigration agents shot and wounded a man during an enforcement operation Thursday in Marble Hill, a neighborhood at Manhattan’s northern tip, with a 5-year-old child in the back seat of his car. New York police said the man was conscious and taken to a hospital after the shooting around 4 p.m. On Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and senior ICE official Marcos Charles defended the agents, saying the target, identified as Oscar Belgal, refused to get out, accelerated and hit two ICE vehicles before agents opened fire. Officials said Belgal, a Dominican national, suffered a superficial neck wound and is being held outside New York state. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for a full public accounting.
