ICC suspends prosecutor Karim Khan pending member-state vote

What's next: The court's 125 member states are set to hold a special session on whether Khan should remain in office.

The International Criminal Court suspended chief prosecutor Karim Khan with immediate effect while member states weigh misconduct allegations involving a staff member in his office. The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties referred the case to the full Assembly, which is expected to meet in a special session as soon as possible. Khan, a 55-year-old British lawyer, has denied the allegations and had already taken voluntary leave in May 2025. The Bureau said the suspension does not prejudge the final outcome. The move comes during intense scrutiny of the Hague-based court, where staff concerns and political pressure have mounted around Khan's leadership and the ICC's high-profile war crimes cases.
