Hurricane Trudy nears Mexico coast as Category 2 storm
Why it matters: Forecasters warned of up to 15 inches of rain, life-threatening flooding, landslides and dangerous surf in western Mexico.
Hurricane Trudy strengthened to a Category 2 storm Saturday as it moved toward Mexico’s southwestern and west-central Pacific coast, with hurricane warnings in effect from Manzanillo in Colima to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Trudy had top sustained winds of 100 mph and was expected to approach the coast Saturday and pass near it into Sunday. Forecasters warned the storm could dump 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals reaching about 15 inches, across Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco. Mexican authorities also warned of storm surge, damaging waves, flooding and landslides, while swells were already creating dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of the coast.
