Yemen airport strike sparks Houthi missile threat at Saudi Arabia

What's next: The clash could rupture a 2022 truce and reopen a wider Saudi-Houthi war as tensions with Iran rise.

A strike on Sanaa International Airport set off the sharpest confrontation in years between Yemen's Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government said it targeted the runway to stop an Iranian plane from landing, while the Houthis blamed Saudi Arabia and threatened retaliation, including against Saudi airports. Saudi air defenses later intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the kingdom's south, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said. The flare-up puts at risk a truce in place since 2022 and comes as friction between the United States and Iran disrupts Gulf shipping and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran condemned the airport attack, while Rashad al-Alimi said he ordered that the confrontation not expand.
