House passes Ukraine aid, Russia sanctions bill in 226-195 vote

What's next: The measure heads to the Senate and faces a likely veto fight after 18 Republicans joined Democrats to force it through.

The House approved a Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions package on Thursday, passing the bill 226-195 despite opposition from Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump’s administration. The measure would provide roughly $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion in security and reconstruction aid, make $8 billion in loans available for Ukraine’s defense, and tighten sanctions on Russian oil, gas and financial networks. Lawmakers forced the vote with a discharge petition that drew 218 signatures, a rare move that bypassed House leadership. Eighteen Republicans joined Democrats to pass the bill, while Rep. Ilhan Omar was the only Democrat to vote no. The legislation now moves to the Senate, where it faces steep odds and a possible presidential veto.
