House GOP joins Democrats to pass Ukraine bill in rebuke to Trump

What's new: Republicans also moved to block or cut several Trump-backed priorities, from a White House ballroom request to a domestic spying measure.

President Donald Trump is running into broader resistance from Republicans in Congress as midterm pressures build, with lawmakers breaking from him on a series of high-profile fights. The clearest rebuke came Thursday, when the House passed a bill to send aid to Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia despite Trump’s opposition and the likelihood of a veto. In the past week, Republicans also rejected $1 billion tied to a White House ballroom, forced a retreat on a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund and blocked legislation on domestic spying. The pushback remains limited, but it signals a greater willingness among some Republicans to defy Trump on spending, national security and surveillance.
