Hong Kong jails Joshua Wong 10 more years in security case
What's next: The new term pushes back Wong's expected January release after he pleaded guilty in September.
Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was sentenced Thursday to 10 more years in prison for collusion with foreign powers under the national security law imposed by Beijing. Wong, one of the city’s most prominent democracy campaigners, had been expected to be released in January after serving four years and eight months for subversion. Authorities filed the new charge in June 2025, accusing him of urging foreign countries and organizations to sanction Hong Kong and China. Wong pleaded guilty in September. The 30-year-old rose to prominence during the 2014 Umbrella Movement and became an internationally known figure during the 2019 protest wave.
