Hilton led Becerra 28%-25% as California governor count stretched on
What's next: Mail ballots could take days to sort out which two candidates reach November under California's top-two primary.
Steve Hilton held a narrow lead over Xavier Becerra in California's governor primary as officials kept counting ballots a day after voting ended. With more than half the vote reported, ABC News showed Hilton at 28%, Becerra at 25% and Tom Steyer at 20% in the race to claim one of two spots on the November ballot. The outcome remained unsettled because of the large number of postal ballots still to be processed. The open-seat race to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom drew more than 60 candidates and became the most expensive gubernatorial contest in state history.
