Health minister pushes vaccination of 1 million dogs in Bali to curb rabies
Dog vaccinations cost about Rp50 ribu each, far below human rabies vaccine at Rp650 ribu and serum at Rp7,7 juta.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin is pushing a mass vaccination campaign for about 1 million dogs in Bali to break the chain of rabies transmission. In a June 23, 2026, meeting with Commission IX of the House of Representatives, he described vaccinating dogs as the most effective and least expensive way compared with treating people after bites. The Health Ministry recorded 91.221 animal-bite cases carrying rabies risk from January to May 2026; Bali and Nusa Tenggara Timur are among the areas with high case numbers. A dog vaccine costs about Rp50 ribu per animal, while a human anti-rabies vaccine costs about Rp650 ribu and anti-rabies serum can reach Rp7,7 juta. Budi said the ministry is preparing VAR and SAR, but animal vaccination falls under agriculture offices and requires coordination with the Agriculture Ministry and local governments.
