Haiti gang attack kills 47, kidnaps more than 50 near capital

Armed men killed at least 47 people and kidnapped more than 50 others in Kenscoff, a hillside community above Port-au-Prince, in an attack the United Nations described Tuesday as one of Haiti's biggest mass kidnappings in recent years. Thousands fled after the assault, which struck an area once seen as relatively secure. A gang leader identified as Izo 2, also known as Didi, threatened in a social media video to kill the hostages if security forces harmed any gang members during operations to retake the area. Analysts said the attack could be aimed at stretching Haiti's already limited police and U.N.-backed multinational resources as the country prepares for Dec. 13 elections, its first general vote in a decade.
