Mount Lokon remains at Level II, stay 1.5 km from crater

Geological Agency logged 89 distant tectonic quakes and 36 emission quakes in late May, but activity did not rise.

Mount Lokon in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi, remains at Level II, or Alert, through May 31, 2026. The Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has banned the public, tourists and climbers from activities within a 1.5-kilometer radius of Tompaluan Crater. During May 16-31, seismic activity was dominated by shallow volcanic quakes and distant tectonic quakes. Authorities recorded 36 emission quakes, 11 deep volcanic quakes, two felt quakes at III MMI, and 89 distant tectonic quakes. Visually, a thin white plume was seen rising about 50 meters above the crater, while flames were seen at the crater floor on May 29. The Geological Agency said visual and seismic data still do not show increased activity, but residents are urged to watch for toxic gases, sudden phreatic eruptions and lahar flooding in river channels that originate on Lokon's summit.
