Greenland commander says Danish bases can deter Arctic threats

What's next: Denmark's 42 billion-kroner Arctic buildup is due to roll out in stages through 2033, with key gear still pending.

Greenland has enough Danish bases and permanent troops to support NATO operations and deter threats in the Arctic, even as Denmark's broader military buildup on the island remains in its early stages, Joint Arctic Command chief Soren Andersen said. He said the main challenge is monitoring Russian and Chinese submarine activity in the GIUK gap, a North Atlantic chokepoint, using ships, drones and surveillance aircraft rather than large new troop deployments in Greenland. Denmark has pledged an extra 42 billion kroner for Arctic defenses after President Donald Trump renewed his push for US control of Greenland. Andersen said some air-defense systems have arrived, a coastal radar for Nuuk is due in July, and a new port and military headquarters are planned from 2026.
