Grand jury rejects indictment of ex-White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson

Why it matters: The decision cuts off a Trump-era false-testimony case tied to Jan. 6 witness testimony.

A federal grand jury in Washington declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson after the Justice Department investigated whether she gave false testimony to the House panel that examined the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Hutchinson has said her testimony was truthful. A prosecutor told US Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui in court on Oct. 27 that a grand jury had rejected a proposed indictment, though the prosecutor did not identify the defendant or charges. Hutchinson became a prominent witness in the congressional inquiry into efforts by Donald Trump’s supporters to block certification of the 2020 election.
